Barbaro
I watched the Preakness today. I was at a horse show yesterday when I heard the news that the race favorite (and my favorite!) broke a leg in the race and was taken to surgery. Watching the race, watching his ankle flop and hoof just hang there...reminded me so much of Tory.
Tory was my beloved thoroughbred broodmare and mother of Taylor. She broke her hind ankle on December 20, 2000 and had to be put to sleep. She died with her head in my lap. Her injury was very similar to Barbaro - shattered sesmoid and fetlock joint (ankle).

It breaks my heart just remembering this. So many horse tragedies this year! Watching this race reminded me of the other time I had a major favorite in a triple crown race, only to have him break down in the Belmost with a broken leg (Charismatic)

This makes me want to go hug my horses...the two I have left - Taylor and Corky. Horses are so fragile! What makes them beautiful also makes them breakable.
